CDOT speeds up road paving schedule for DNC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Many viewers have contacted Channel 9 asking if the recent paving projects in uptown are for the Democratic National Convention.

Charlotte Department of Transportation said it planned to pave the roads whether the DNC was coming to Charlotte or not.

CDOT officials said they did speed up the schedule to make sure this work was done before preparations for the convention started.

“It was really important that this all be completed by July,” said CDOT representative Linda Durrett.

The paving consists of 4.2 miles inside the Interstate 277 loop at a cost of $840,000. Crews have some minor details left to finish the project.

Many drivers were left frustrated the last few months ago trying to work around the paving spots.

“It’s an upgrade so we’re glad to have it. But, in the meantime, it’s a little bit of a hassle,” said driver Brian Boone.

Channel 9 tried to track down Boone to get his thoughts on the upgrades two months later, but was unable to reach him.

Jasmine Dupont, who works in uptown, is glad to have the paving project behind her. “(I) couldn’t even get down there. You had to park, either park or walk or if you were not riding, then you were in traffic.”

There was also a lot of work going on underground as utility companies were upgrading pipes and wires under the surface.
