Woman found shot to death in parking lot of Scarborough community center

CHARLOTTE — One person was found shot and killed Friday morning in the parking lot of the Scarborough Community Resource Center on Stitt Road near Eastway Drive in northeast Charlotte, MEDIC said.

Police got to the parking lot, where they found a female victim who had been shot. She died at the scene.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are leading the homicide investigation.

The victim has been identified as Brianye Copeland, 27.

Officers caught up with a person of interest a short time later at an apartment complex on Old Concord Road. They were processing a blue Nissan Sentra.

CMPD arrested Kristopher Anthony Sinclair, 38, and charged him with murder for his involvement in the case.

The Scarborough Center was closed for the day. Some learned that when they went there to seek services.

‘When I pulled in here, I saw all the tape and the cop cars and everything, and I was like, ‘Oh Lord,’” said resident Chevonne Handy.

“That’s the way the world is going; it’s just, it’s heartbreaking,” said resident Jackie Addison. “It’s so heartbreaking, you know. I don’t know what this world is coming to. I just hope and pray everybody comes together.”

Handy told Channel 9 that she feels safe in the area, and this incident isn’t going to change that because there is plenty of security.

“They got like 3 security guards when you walk in, like the door you go through, it’s scanned, they check your pocketbook and everything, and there is a police substation not more than 15 feet away from there,” Handy expressed.

The investigation is ongoing, CMPD said.
