CMPD: Shooting at apartments near UNCC leaves 1 dead; no arrests made

CHARLOTTE — Police are searching for a suspect after a 20-year-old man was shot and killed Monday night at an apartment complex near the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. at the Arcadia Student Living Complex along Falling Waters Court, where many UNCC students live off-campus.

Police told Channel 9 someone shot Yazeed Alsawalha, 20, inside one of the apartments. Alsawalha later died at the hospital, but CMPD has not released their name.

Authorities have not said what led up to the shooting. They said there were witnesses, but so far they have not made any arrests.

“It amazes me when I come to one of these scenes and I stand here in front of the media and say, ‘We really don’t have much to go on at this moment,’ then in very short order they’re able to get names and faces and arrests,” CMPD Maj. Mike Campagna said. “So, I’m looking forward to that happening in this case. In order to make that happen though, the community’s assistance is critical.”

No further information has been released.
