LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. — Two 14-year-old girls who a coroner described as best friends died Thursday when their all-terrain vehicle struck a tractor-trailer in a small South Carolina town.

The girls were trying to cross state Highway 56 in Joanna around 4:30 p.m. when the wreck happened, state troopers said.

Jasmine Peake, 14, of Joanna, and Madison Simmons, 14, of Gray Court, were not wearing helmets and died at the scene, the Laurens County Coroner’s Office said.
