CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man and a woman were arrested after 6 kilograms of heroin was found in a stash house near Charlotte's airport, officials said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police told reporter Mark Becker they hope the bust will at least temporarily put a significant dent in the heroin trade in the Charlotte area.
"You always work it up if you can, and in this case we found a stash house that contained a large amount of heroin," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Capt. Coerte Vorhees said Friday.
The drugs were probably headed for sale on the streets of Charlotte, where the heroin market has been holding steady for the last two years, Vorhees said.
"It's a significant seizure for this area," he said.
Police said Floridalma Amaya, 40, of Mint Hill; and Reynaldo Pulido-Martinez, 31, who lived in the apartment; were arrested.
The manager of the apartments where Pulido-Martinez lived said he was quiet and showed no indication that he had drugs inside his home, except that he had changed the lock on the front door.
The apartment is across the fence from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and agents found a suitcase with a false bottom inside, but police said they don't know if the drugs came in by air.
"We know that drugs are transported in various ways -- trains, planes and automobiles. You just never know," Vorhees said.
