2.0-magnitude earthquake reported near Statesville

STATESVILLE, N.C. — A 2.0-magnitude earthquake was reported about three miles west of Statesville, North Carolina Saturday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.

It happened at 8:33 a.m., about 15 miles northwest of Mooresville and 17 miles northeast of northeast of Newton.

No injuries or damage were reported after the small earthquake.

Earthquakes of 2.5 magnitudes or less are usually not felt but officials said they can be recorded by a seismograph.

The largest earthquake in the area (magnitude 5.1) occurred in 1916, and the second largest happened in 2020.
