The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is now available for the 2027-28 school year, launching earlier than ever before.
The U.S. Department of Education says the latest version has been redesigned with simpler language and a streamlined process. Department officials say most families can complete the form in about 15 minutes.
The new form also makes it easier for students to invite a parent or spouse contributor by text or email, according to reports from ABC News.
Federal Student Aid says the 2027-28 version includes updated wording based on user research and changes intended to reduce confusion and errors.
FAFSA is used to determine eligibility for federal financial aid, including grants, work-study, and federal student loans. Completing the form can also be required for state and school-based financial aid.
The Education Department began testing the 2027-28 FAFSA in August before making it available more broadly. The official deadline for the new form is Oct. 1, 2026.
The early rollout comes as families continue to face concerns about the cost of higher education. Education officials are encouraging students to complete the FAFSA so they can determine what financial aid may be available to them.
