Man charged weeks after elderly woman found dead inside Rowan County home

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Police have made an arrest nearly two months after a 79-year-old woman was found dead inside her Rowan County home following what appeared to be a break-in.

Deputies said they responded around 8 p.m. on June 10 to a home on Wyatt Grove Church Road.

According to investigators, a family member of Judy Eller Hoffner came to the home and discovered her dead inside. Hoffner lived alone.

Deputies said the home appeared to have been broken into and Hoffner was murdered inside.

On Tuesday, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said it had charged 30-year-old Robert Singletary with murder, robbery with a firearm and breaking and entering. Officials said Singletary was already in jail on an unrelated arrest on July 21.

Authorities said more details about the case would be released Tuesday afternoon.
