Action 9 helps Cornelius woman get refund for ‘free’ lab work

CORNELIUS, N.C. — Patsy Baker of Cornelius works for a bank. The company offers its employees a discount on health insurance if they get a wellness check-up.

Baker went to Quest Diagnostics to have lab work done as part of her check-up. She told Action 9′s Jason Stoogenke that the lab work was supposed to be free. But a few months later, she received a bill from Quest Diagnostics for $669.

Baker said she tried contacting the company about the charge several times, but she didn’t have much luck. Then the pandemic hit.

“I thought they’re overwhelmed, they’ll get around to it,” she said.

Eventually, a collection agency contacted her about the charge, so to protect her credit she paid the bill. That’s when she also decided to contact Action 9.

After hearing her story, Stoogenke emailed Quest Diagnostics. Seven days later, Baker said the company agreed to refund her.

“I never thought I’d see that money back,” she said.

Action 9 asked the company for details about Baker’s situation, but a company representative said they could not comment on it, but they were glad it had been resolved.
