Affordable housing at Brookhill Village redevelopment hinges on public funding

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The development group proposing to build new mixed-income housing on the Brookhill Village site near South End is seeking $19.8 million via loans from the city and an affordable-housing fund as well as a grant for site improvements.

If the development team doesn’t receive public support, financial and legal forces and deadlines will drive market-rate development at what’s being called New Brookhill, according to a new website for the project.

Brookhill Village, a 37-acre site at South Tryon Street and Remount Road, has long been a speculative redevelopment target. But the land has a complicated ownership structure, including a ground lease that doesn’t expire until 2049, so the property has sat largely untouched for decades.
