RICHMOND COUNTY, N.C. — Amazon and Duke Energy have the green light to run more than 600 diesel generators at the upcoming Richmond County data center campus.
Both companies received approval from the Department of Environmental Quality on Friday, approving their air permit applications.
The DEQ is requiring additional monitoring of the generators, given significant local concerns about pollution,
Amazon plans to build 588 generators to provide backup power to the data center.
Duke Energy will have 57 generators that will run around the clock until the permanent power source is fully operational.
Channel 9 was at the hearings last month as residents voiced opposition to the project. Concerns included potential impacts from noise and pollution.
