Angels and Sparrows helps provide meals and support to the community

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — At Angels and Sparrows kitchen, the service is the point.

“We do that so everyone can feel welcomed and we do that with dignity and respect,” executive director Brandi Jones said.

That’s exactly how resident Sasha Howell feels every time she and her kids eat at Angels and Sparrows in Huntersville.

“It seemed like everybody knows my name now,” resident Sasha Howell said, “It made me feel good because I don’t eat meat, but the kids do, and they be like, “You the one who don’t eat meat, right? So they remember me”

During Channel 9’s most recent visit, the community kitchen didn’t have air conditioning so they improvised. But usually the line grows long before the doors open at 11 a.m. and 250 meals are prepared in this volunteer-run kitchen.

“I love being a volunteer here,” volunteer Jeff Jones says, “Anybody that’ll listen to me, I tell them that it’s the best part of my week.”

And seeing it in action is believing.

“I get to meet the people, have time to listen to their stories, meet the children,” volunteer Kiah Boxworth said.

Brandi Jones runs the kitchen and its partner services that offer a reading program and workforce development.

“We make sure that they first have that stability because if someone’s hungry, it affects so much more,” Jones said,.

Jones says they serve more than 1,000 families every year and already in the first six months of this year, they’ve served 123 new families.

“There’s just tons of needs. Like I said, they continue to grow,” Jones said.

“Food every day, school supplies, Pampers for my nonverbal autistic son, and just like warming hearts also,” Howell says.

“If we can help you eat, maybe you can afford to pay the rent,” Boxworth says.

“There’s a lot of people that need help, and so I feel like I’m doing a part to make the world a better place,” volunteer Mary Wilkins said.
