Bags filled with rice, candy, KKK flyer found in Alexander Co. yards

HIDDENITE, N.C. — The Ku Klux Klan may be recruiting in parts of Alexander County.

A Hiddenite resident said small bags filled with rice, candy and KKK literature ended up in some front yards during the last week.

The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies have received reports of the KKK bags.

Sheriff deputies collected nearly a dozen of the bags.

Sheriff Chris Bowman said he will charge people with littering if they're caught throwing the baggies in yards.

Nearly all of the small baggies were found in yards along Sharpe Lane

"I think they need to grow up," a resident, who did not want to be identified, said.

Bowman dialed the number found inside the bag. The address came back to Pelham, North Carolina.

"This message has been brought to you by the loyal white knights of the Klu Klux Klan," the message said after Bowman called the number.

"I would definitely like a call back at the Alexander County Sheriff's Office," Bowman said.

Bowman believes the group is littering and doesn't believe its message of white power has a place in Alexander County.

"This county is not like that, and as long as I'm sitting in this chair, we want to try to prevent it all we can," Bowman said.

Deputies have not been able to identify the person responsible.

"No place whatsoever for them here,” resident Stan Durmire said. “We don't need it or want it."
