‘Barbenheimer’ takes social media, movie theaters by storm during opening weekend

CHARLOTTE — Movie theaters across North America have had quite the blockbuster weekend, thanks to the combined releases of ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’.

According to CNN, this is the first time in movie history that a film has topped $100 million dollars and another earned over $50 million in the United States over the course of the same three-day weekend.

Barbie raked in more than $150 million earning the largest opening weekend spot this year. The film is now also the biggest debut ever for a female director.

Channel 9 headed out to Cinemax in south Charlotte, where we ran into some fans dressed as Barbie from different eras. For moviegoer, Carol Jones Vanburen, she chose to style her groovy get-up after the 1970s Barbie.

“It’s like retro, you’ve got modern-day Barbie, I’m more of the 70s Barbie for some of us older people,” Jones said.

The final numbers for the box office weekend will be released on Monday.
