CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Soon, when the Charlotte Bobcats take the floor, they could have a new name and a new look.
The Bobcats said Michael Jordan will make a major announcement at the arena at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and everyone is expecting it will be a plan to bring back the buzz.
CBS Sports says the Bobcats filed paperwork to get the "Hornets" name back after New Orleans dropped it.
It's fitting timing, says Catherine Hawkins, because Monday is the anniversary of the Mecklenburg declaration of independence and the Hornets name is a part of that history.
"The connection of that name is in this area and meant a lot of people who lived in this area" says Hawkins.
The British referred to Charlotte as a hornets' nest of rebellion during the Revolutionary War.
Tricia Kent and her son Evan are still big Hornets fans.
"It's as much about regaining a piece of our heritage the NBA allowed Shinn to take away from us" said Kent.
Evan and his brother started a website and Facebook page called Bring Back the Buzz.
Monday, the Bobcats wouldn't comment, but the team recently surveyed fans on bringing back the Hornets name.
The NBA has said a team name change takes 18 months.
So if the Bobcats just started the process, it's likely they will still have one more season as the Bobcats.
