CHARLOTTE — Police say two Charlotte brothers are behind a crime spree that included shootings, armed robberies and vehicle thefts.
The brothers, Dionte and Jatarius McCracking, now face nearly 200 charges combined and are being held in jail without bond.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested Dionte McCracking last week after investigators said he shot an officer.
Less than two weeks before that officer was shot in the shoulder, police tied the McCracking brothers to a shooting that left a west Charlotte home riddled with bullets and a separate shooting that left a 72-year-old man wounded.
“We just woke up to the gunshots, and we were saying they hit the house,” said a man who was too shaken to be identified.
Several family members were inside the home on Irma Street when the shooting happened Aug. 26, the man said.
Less than two hours before that shooting, CMPD investigated a shooting on Reliance Street and came under fire.
On Aug. 30 at about 5 a.m., CMPD returned to Irma Street for a shots-fired call.
Authorities say those incidents were only a small part of a crime spree that stretched over about six weeks and included the theft of several vehicles from dealerships on South Boulevard.
Dionte McCracking was charged in those thefts after an hours-long standoff ended with him being handcuffed and carried out by officers.
The CMPD officer who was shot has since returned home and is recovering.
The brothers are in jail and are being held without bond.
