Charlotte Water solar project to feed power into Huntersville grid

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Charlotte Water opened a new solar facility on 10 acres of utility property on Jim Kidd Road in Huntersville.

The system generates enough power to supply electricity to roughly 380 homes annually. That production capacity can also offset the energy used by one of Charlotte Water’s treatment plants.

Solar developer EnerWealth owns the facility, which was constructed on property owned by Charlotte Water that was previously sitting vacant.

EnerWealth is selling the electricity generated by the system to EnergyUnited under a contract lasting a minimum of 10 years.

Kimberly Holmes-Iverson, representing Charlotte Water, noted that the public utility provided the acreage for the development.

“All of the power here will go back into the grid to help folks in Huntersville,” Holmes-Iverson said. “We only had to provide the land and it seemed like a no-brainer to help out.”
