Boy in critical condition after Charlotte-bound Amtrak train hits truck

DURHAM, N.C. — An 8-year-old boy is in critical condition and his brother was also injured after an Amtrak train headed to Charlotte crashed into a pickup truck Monday evening in Durham.

Officials said the train collided with the truck after the vehicle had gotten stuck between the crossing arms.

The boy’s father, who was driving the truck, was not hurt, but the child’s 2-year-old brother was.

None of the 140 passengers on the train were injured, according to police, but the train was delayed for about two hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
