Officers said they found 22-year-old Keontez Stephens in the street and he had been shot. Paramedics took him to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

On Tuesday, police said they had arrested 19-year-old Ziaire Mayo and charged him with murder.

CMPD spokesperson Rob Tufano told Channel 9 that Stephens’ father drove down from Virginia immediately after the homicide, and spoke to police, trying to make sense of what happened to his son.

“What do you say to a father like that, who loses his only son at 22 years old? There’s nothing you can say to this man,” Tufano said.

Investigators at the time said more people need to get involved in helping solve these cases.

“I think it is unusual for this particular neighborhood,” Maj. Allan Rutledge said. “We certainly get frustrated coming out to these unfortunate scenes time and time again and we get very little cooperation from anyone in the community that know anything at all.”

This was Charlotte’s 69th homicide of 2020.

No further information has been released.
