1 dead, 3 hurt after multi-car crash in east Charlotte; driver arrested

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a deadly crash Wednesday in east Charlotte.

The crash involved at least three vehicles and happened just after 6 p.m. on North Sharon Amity Road near Wilora Lake Road.

When officers got to the area, they found a 2005 GMC Yukon, 2003 Mitsubishi Galant and a 2014 Ford Focus, all of which had been involved in the collision.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, 32-year-old Ingrid Freiheit, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three others were hurt, but are expected to be OK.

An early investigation indicates the GMC was driving north on North Sharon Amity Road when it hit the Mitsubishi, which was making a left turn onto North Sharon Amity Road from Wilora Lake Road.

After the initial crash, the Mitsubishi crossed into the path of the Ford in the southbound lanes of North Sharon Amity Road.

Officers said the driver of the GMC, 34-year-old Julio Perez was driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed, which contributed to the collision.

After Perez was released from the hospital and interviewed by detectives, he was served with warrants for involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, driving while license revoked and fictitious registration.

No other information has been released.
