CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are searching for the car that hit and killed a bicyclist in east Charlotte last weekend.

The crash happened just after 9 p.m. last Saturday on The Plaza, near Anderson Street just outside of NoDa.

When officers got to the area, they found a bicyclist, Karim Akbar, in the roadway and he was not wearing a helmet. He died at the scene because of his injuries.

Police said their initial investigation shows the car hit Akbar, who was crossing the road at the time. When the car hit Akbar, Akbar and the bike were thrown off the road and landed in the grass near the sidewalk.

The driver did not call 911 and did not stop after hitting Akbar, according to CMPD.

It appears speed is not a factor in the crash, but officers are working to determine if alcohol played a part.

Police said they are looking for a 2015 to 2017 Honda Civic with frond-end damage. It is also missing the Honda emblem from the grill.

No other information has been released.

This is an ongoing investigation. Check back with wsoctv.com for updates.
