Sources: Driver fatally shot on I-85 was victim of road rage; suspect arrested

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have made an arrest following a homicide in north Charlotte where a driver was fatally shot Saturday evening.

Sources told Channel 9 that the shooting was the result of a random road rage situation, though police have yet to confirm that.

Officers responded to the scene just before 6 p.m. on Interstate 85 southbound near Beatties Ford Road and Statesville Avenue. Police said they found a man shot in his vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Monday, police identified the victim as 58-year-old Carleton Cartier.

Sources told Channel 9′s Glenn Counts that Cartier was shot while he was driving, and his car collided with another vehicle. The person in the other car is expected to be OK.

CMPD announced on Monday that they had arrested 24-year-old Kevin Jordan and charged him with Cartier’s murder.

On Saturday night, shortly after the shooting, detectives identified Jordan as the suspect and tried to pull his vehicle over. Officials said Jordan refused to stop, though, and led officers on a chase that ended after he jumped out of his car and tried to run.

CMPD quickly caught him though, and Jordan was taken to police headquarters, where he was charged with murder, discharging a firearm Into an occupied vehicle, felony flee to elude and resisting public officers.

No other details about what led to the shooting have been released.
