CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested a man and charged him with murder in the shooting death of another man in north Charlotte late Monday night.
The shooting happened in the 2300 block of Julia Avenue, off Statesville Road just before 11 p.m.
Officers told Channel 9 Wednesday morning that they arrested 32-year-old Damayron Damon Harris.
When police initially arrived on the scene, they found 33-year-old Dalton Dion Hopkins suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Although a tourniquet was applied to his leg, Hopkins was pronounced dead at Carolinas Medical Center.
Officials said they believe the shooting was an isolated incident.
Channel 9 found that within a 1-mile radius of the neighborhood, 20 crimes were reported in the last week alone -- ranging from larcenies to assault to burglary.
Harris was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and was booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail.
Police are asking anyone with any information to call Crimestoppers.
