CMS board approves another round of retention bonuses

CHARLOTTE — On Tuesday night, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board of Education approved another round of retention bonuses for district workers.

Channel 9 first reported on the bonuses last year when the district started offering them.

Full-time workers will get $5,000, and part-time employees, $2,500. Substitute teachers would be included as part-time employees and bus drivers and cafeteria workers are also eligible.

The bonuses will come later this month and again in November.

Wake County approved the same amount in late 2021 for its employees -- that’s where the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Association of Educators got this figure.

$49 million would come from federal COVID-19 aid to cover the costs.

CMS told Channel 9 in December it had more than 800 resignations this school year alone. The bonuses aim to address that issue.
