CMS high school students to start wearing clear backpacks soon

CHARLOTTE — Students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be wearing clear backpacks in the coming weeks.

District leaders say the bags have arrived and are in the CMS warehouse. The district spent more than $440,000 dollars on 46,000 bookbags.

The school system is requiring high school students to wear the see-through bags to improve student safety.

By Channel 9′s count, 24 guns have been found on CMS campuses this 2021-2022 school year.

We also asked CMS about other weapons found inside their schools during routine safety screenings. The district said this school year, they’ve confiscated 79 pepper spray containers, 12 tasers, and 29 knives.
