INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — The local group held a balloon release for Donqwavias “Quay” Davis Sunday afternoon. Donqwavias was murdered at an apartment complex near UNC Charlotte in 2019.
Mom’s Ain’t Playing gathered at Crooked Creek Park in Indian Trial to honor officers as a part of “Quay Day.”
Donqwavias’ mother, Clydia Davis, said the goal of the events was to serve people in law enforcement because that’s something her son did before he died.
“You gotta pray for your leaders. They lead us, they protect us, they serve us and this world would be a mess without them. Our cities and surrounding towns would be a mess without them,” Clydia Davis told Channel 9.
Later this week, Mom’s Ain’t Playing is heading to Raleigh to sit down with lawmakers and discuss how to make it tougher for suspects to bond out of jail.
This corresponds with another push to ensure violent criminals stay in jail until their trial in North Carolina. Some argue bonds are too low for some crimes and that some suspects have been able to get out of jail quickly.
Under the new proposal, if someone is arrested for a violent crime a magistrate will not be allowed to set their bond. It would be up to a judge. So far, it has bipartisan support.
