CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 looked into parents' concerns and Charlotte-Mecklenburg School leaders’ response after students were intoxicated and spitting at the band during an Ardrey Kell High School football game last month.

Principal David Switzer sent a message to parents saying “We had a significant number of students who were intoxicated, high on drugs, cussing.”

Channel 9 obtained emails from the days after that incident.

"I was completely disgusted by their behavior and embarrassed,” one parent said. “Games should be fun and exciting, not a place where you feel unwanted and threatened."

When others asked what consequences students faced, Switzer responded, “The students that we confirmed were involved have been dealt with and law enforcement is involved."

Resident Cindy Sloan reached out to CMS following the incident hoping to help parents with kids struggling with alcohol and drugs through her “Not My Child” program.

“That's what parents say, ‘Not my kid,’” Sloan said. “Well, we've got to get our heads out of the sand and say, ‘Yes, this is happening.’”

Switzer said he plans to do more individual student checks, and students will need their school ID to enter the student section.
