UNION COUNTY, N.C. — The N.C. Department of Transportation announced detours will be in place during the construction of a roundabout in Union County.
A $1.9 million contract has been awarded to NJR Group Inc. by the NCDOT to build a roundabout at the intersection of N.C. 200 and N.C. 218.
Construction is planned to begin by the end of February. The roundabout is expected to be completed by June 3, and landscaping will continue into November, officials said.
Drivers can use the detour: Lawyers Road, Steven Mills Road, Idlewild Road, Indian Trail-Fairview Road, and N.C. 218 to return to Mill Grove Road.
According to NCDOT, roundabouts improve safety for not only drivers but also pedestrians and cyclists. Roundabouts also lessen day-to-day traffic backups that are more common at stop signs and traffic lights.
