Cornelius brewery cancels drag brunch fundraiser after influx of threats

CORNELIUS, N.C. — A Cornelius brewery canceled a sold-out drag show fundraiser after they said they received several negative messages and threats.

Eleven Lakes Brewing’s Drag Brunch for a Cause was scheduled for Aug. 30, but the brewery canceled it out of an abundance of caution for the safety of the staff, according to our partners at The Charlotte Observer.

The fundraiser would have benefitted Carolina Migrant Network, a nonprofit that provides free services to immigrant communities.

One of the brewery’s owners said that the harassment had been going on for roughly two weeks, with about a dozen phone calls and an ongoing stream of emails and Facebook messages.

Owners say the threats became increasingly violent when the event was amplified to a larger audience through the right-leaning social media account Libs of TikTok.

The owner stood by her decision to cancel the event despite criticism that the brewery had caved to protesters. She said she just couldn’t put her employees lives at risk.
