Could Texas-based Whataburger be coming to Charlotte?

CHARLOTTE — Plans for a pre-submittal meeting were filed with the city of Charlotte to convert a building that housed a bank into a Texas-based Whataburger fast-food restaurant.

The location is at the former Suntrust Bank on the Tyvola Square property on South Boulevard, according to the filing.

A pre-submittal meeting is required for urban-zoned projects to be reviewed by city staff members.

Our partners at the Charlotte Observer reported that Ana Flores, a spokeswoman for Whataburger at its PR firm, the Hahn Agency, said, “We don’t have any information to share today, but I’ll be sure to add you to our media list and keep you posted as details are solidified.”

The Houston Chronicle reported last year that the chain’s new owner had plans to open new locations outside its home market, in Colorado, Missouri and Tennessee . WMFB News reported earlier this year in Greenville that Whataburger was looking at sites in upstate South Carolina, too.

Reporter Joe Bruno called What-A-Burger #1 in Kannapolis and they said the filing was not associated with the Carolina chain with locations in our area.
