CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — The Chester County Council recognized James Preston “J.P.” McNeil III, the county’s deputy director of Fire Services, during a Monday night meeting for rescuing several people from a burning vehicle. McNeil pulled multiple individuals, including children, from a burning car on North Paraham Road in York County.
The crash occurred Aug. 1 while McNeil was traveling with his family. First responders who arrived at the scene credited his quick thinking and bravery with saving lives and preventing further loss of life after coming upon the vehicle engulfed in flames.
In recognition of his actions, Chester County presented McNeil with a commemorative plaque honoring his courage and selfless service.
During the meeting, Councilman Corey Guy delivered personal remarks regarding McNeil’s character and dedication as a public servant. South Carolina House Rep. John King also presented McNeil with a South Carolina state flag on behalf of himself, Rep. McDaniel and the state.
County officials praised McNeil’s willingness to step forward during an emergency.
“True heroism is not defined by a title, a uniform, or whether someone is on duty,” county officials said. “It is defined by the willingness to act when other need it the most.”
