Deputies: Teacher in Statesville faces additional sex crime charges with student

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — An Iredell-Statesville Schools teacher is facing additional sex crime charges with a student, deputies said.

On Monday, deputies said Elizabeth Suzanne Bailey, 36, is now facing charges for felony statutory sex offense with a child under 15 and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Investigators said they received information from a family member of the victim who came forward and had additional evidence to show the extent of the relationship between Bailey and the victim.

The new charges come after the sheriff’s office said on July 20 that they received a report of Bailey having a sexual relationship with a student. After several interviews with witnesses and the victim, authorities got a warrant for digital and social media communications between Bailey and the victim.

After several attempts, deputies were unable to find Bailey. A few days later, she turned herself in at the Iredell County Detention Center.

Bailey was initially charged with felony statutory rape of a person who is 15 years of age or younger, felony indecent liberties with a minor and felony sexual activity with a student.

She was released on a $75,000 bond from her first charges but has been issued a $50,000 bond for the additional charges. She is currently under house arrest with electronic monitoring.

School officials said Bailey worked at Northview Academy, formerly known as Pressly Alternative School. She was first employed with the Iredell-Statesville School District in February 2010 as an assistant. She most recently worked as a science teacher.

Iredell-Statesville Schools said Bailey has been suspended with pay pending an investigation by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

No other details have been released.
