Teen killed in shooting at west Charlotte townhomes, police say

CHARLOTTE — A suspect has been arrested after the deadly shooting of a teen last week in west Charlotte, police said.

Shortly after 2 p.m. on Aug. 11, officers responded to a call in the 3100 block of Southwest Boulevard at the Birch Townhomes complex near West Charlotte High School. When officers arrived, they found a teen with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to Atrium Main by MEDIC and was pronounced dead.

Police said the juvenile was shot inside an apartment. The victim was identified as Gregory Lacorde Holmes, 14.

Channel 9 spoke off-camera Friday with the person who lives inside that apartment.

The resident said his cousin had brought over a friend, both around 14 or 15.

The cousin pulled the trigger and killed his friend, the witness said.

“It’s just tragic that it was such younger children that were involved in it,” the resident said.

The suspect ran after shooting the teen in the head. The resident who Channel 9 spoke with said he doesn’t know where his cousin ran off to.

Police released an updated on Wednesday saying a juvenile was in custody and facing a murder charge. We still don’t know what led up to the shooting.

“We are frustrated and concerned with the amount of juvenile victims and perpetrators,” CMPD Maj. J.P. Bryley said.

Officers say this is an active investigation.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is asking anyone with information to call 704-432-TIPS and speak with the Homicide Unit detective.
