PINEVILLE, N.C. — A small earthquake was reported in the Pineville area of southern Mecklenburg County Friday morning.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 2.1 earthquake was detected just before 5 a.m.
The epicenter was about a mile northwest of Pineville.
At least 11 people reported feeling the quake, according to the USGS website.
The agency reports the largest earthquake in the area, a magnitude 5.1, was in 1916. Moderately damaging quakes hit the Carolinas every decade, according to USGS. Smaller earthquakes are felt about one every year or two.
Earthquakes have been reported in the area since at least 1776, according to USGS.
