CHESTER, S.C. — A juvenile riding a bicycle was injured in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday on Smith Street in Chester, leading to the arrest of a driver who later turned herself in, police said.
Chester police officers initially responded to the scene after receiving a report that a vehicle struck the juvenile and left the area without stopping. Authorities initially described the suspect vehicle as a black SUV.
The driver later arrived at the Chester Police Department after expressing concern that she may have struck something earlier in the day, according to investigators. Officers observed minor visible damage to the front hood of her black GMC SUV.
During an interview with investigators, the driver stated she was driving her daughter to softball practice when she felt her vehicle hit something. She told police she turned around to give her infant a bottle and subsequently heard a thump on Smith Street.
Emergency medical personnel transported the injured juvenile to CMC Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte for medical treatment.
Authorities transported the suspect to the Chester County Detention Center, where she will be charged with hit-and-run resulting in bodily injury.
The Chester Police Department said the collision remains under active investigation.
Police did not release the driver’s name.
