Driver who ran from deadly hit-and-run crash in Iredell County charged

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man has been charged after North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers say he ran from the scene of a deadly hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning in Iredell County.

It happened just after 3 a.m. on Chestnut Grove Road at Beechwood Farm Road in Newton.

Troopers said a 2004 Buick LeSabre was stopped in the roadway after having a mechanical issue when a 2011 Ford F150 crashed into it.

The driver of the Buick, 55-year-old Robert Selvey, was thrown from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Ford ran away on foot.

Based on evidence from the crash, troopers arrested and charged 27-year-old Travis Wilhelm with felony hit-and-run.

Officials said more charges could come as the investigation continues.

No other information has been released.
