CHARLOTTE — The North Carolina Department of Transportation closed Caldwell Street and a portion of Interstate 277 Inner on Thursday night to repair a damaged bridge beam. The full closure in Uptown is scheduled to continue through early Monday morning.
Crews say they discovered impact damage to the Caldwell Street bridge during a routine inspection last week.
The repairs began July 30 and include heat straightening a section of the damaged bridge beam, along with removing the damaged portion and welding in a new beam.

Through 5 a.m. Monday, all traffic on the inner loop of the Brookshire Freeway will be diverted at Exit 3A. Drivers will then be directed back onto I-277 closer to Davidson Street.
The traffic restrictions also include ramp closures from I-77 to the inner loop of the Brookshire Freeway. Drivers will use John Belk Freeway to access I-277.

Drivers traveling through the area should expect delays and allow extra time to reach their destinations while the bridge repairs are underway.
