CHARLOTTE — Duke Energy is getting $50 million in federal funding to improve and modernize its power grid across parts of the Carolinas.
The U.S. Department of Energy announced the award during a visit to South Carolina.
It is part of the nearly $2 billion SPARK initiative, which aims to improve power reliability while making better use of existing infrastructure.
The Duke Energy project will focus on Greenville and Spartanburg counties in South Carolina and Polk and Henderson counties in western North Carolina.
The funding will be used to upgrade the transmission system without building new power lines or additional generation.
