CHARLOTTE — The Federal Aviation Administration announced that a ground stop had been issued at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport on Sunday morning.

The effects of that ground stop continued to mushroom as the day went on.

Thousands of passengers were affected. On Sunday afternoon, more than 40 flights had been canceled and more than 600 flights had been delayed.

That has caused a number of passengers to have to make alternative plans. Zach Cummings was trying to get back home to Charlotte from Tampa and said this was a big inconvenience.

“Yeah, it aggravates me,” Cummings said. “I got lucky because I have buddies who live in Tampa and when you’re planning things and you have people picking you up at the airport, it’s pretty frustrating, yeah.”

“So, we ended up canceling that flight and rebooking on another airline, trying to get my whole family home on the same flight,” said Josh Schmidt, a passenger. “Pain in the butt, but it’s travel.”

The ground stop began Sunday morning around 9:30 and ended a couple of hours later. Airport officials said it was weather and an equipment issue on one of the runways.
