Fifth Third Bank hits 2028 goal for Charlotte-area branches and plans two more

Fifth Third Bank plans branch in Charlotte’s Historic West End

CHARLOTTE — Fifth Third Bank (NASDAQ: FITB) has already reached its 2028 goal of eight new Charlotte-area branches and plans two more.

Shawn Niehaus, head of consumer banking at Fifth Third, said the bank will open 55 Southeast branches this year. Another 50 are ready for 2027 and 50 more for the year after, he said.

The bank added three local branches in 2026. Two more are planned, including one in the second quarter of 2027. Those two locations have not been publicly identified, though Fifth Third has filed federal paperwork for a second Fort Mill branch.

Fifth Third pledged in 2023 to add eight branches in the Charlotte region by 2028. The spokesperson said the goal still stands, and the 2023 openings count toward it. The bank has added eight since then and now plans 10.

Charlotte openings will slow from three in 2026, while the Southeast target stays near 50 a year. Niehaus said the bank began its Southeast push “putting Charlotte first and prioritizing it as a key market.”

The Charlotte new-branch building program began in 2018 and targets 26 locations in total, the spokesperson said. Fifth Third had 50 active branches in the Charlotte metro area as of Sept. 30.
