Authorities: Former Winthrop board member dead in apparent murder-suicide

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A former chair of Winthrop University's Board of Trustees was shot and killed Monday.

Authorities said 81-year-old Dr. Mary Jean Martin was shot by her husband 91-year-old James Martin. He then shot himself at their home in Rock Hill, they said.

Authorities are calling the deaths a murder-suicide.

Both of the Martins had failing health.
