CHARLOTTE — North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein cut the ribbon to welcome a new driver license office to Charlotte Monday.

The celebration marked the opening of the largest Division of Motor Vehicles office in the state.

The new office on Albemarle Road replaces the older, smaller office previously located nearby on Executive Circle.

Officials say the larger space will allow DMV employees to serve more customers.

“Every North Carolinian relies on the DMV at some point – and they want to get in, get out, and get on with their day,” Gov. Stein said. “We’re making steady progress to shorten wait times, provide better service, and improve the DMV experience statewide. To date, we have cut wait times by 86%. We will continue our work to get people back on the road safely and efficiently.”

The office is only for driver license and ID card services. It will not serve as a license plate agency.

The office is located at 5525 Albemarle Road, Suite 200.

In 2027, the state says five new offices are scheduled to be opened or relocated thanks to recent investments from House Bill 125, which Gov. Stein signed into law in August 2025.
