CHARLOTTE — Mecklenburg County is recognizing Sept. 25 as Dolly Parton Day.
Commissioners unanimously decided to honor Dolly Parton for her kindness, philanthropy, and service.
They are challenging people to perform at least one Dolly good deed and donate a book to a child through Smart Start of Mecklenburg County.
Gov. Josh Stein signed a state proclamation Friday morning.
“Dolly Parton was so special: authentic and universally loved. Her music was powerful and moving, and she leaves a lasting impact — from advancing early literacy to helping communities rebuild after Hurricane Helene,” said Stein in a news release. “The Imagination Library Day of Reading celebrates Dolly’s life and honors her artistic talents, her humanity, and her legacy of fostering a love of reading for all children. Today let us celebrate her legacy by reading a book or lending a helping hand.”
Nashville will have pink lights illuminating the city and giveaways of stickers, buttons, and bookmarks, according to the AP.
At 5 p.m., participating music venues will have live performances of “9 to 5,” according to Nashville’s website.
Parton died last month of cancer.
“For Dolly, giving was always personal and from her heart,” Jeff Conyers, The Dollywood Foundation president, said in a statement to the AP. “She believed deeply in helping people, especially children, and she always felt if you are in a position to help, you should help.”
