Suspect in custody after gun found in bushes on campus of Vance High School

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A gun was found on the campus of Vance High School in University City Wednesday morning, officials said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said the gun was found in some bushes outside the school.

Officials said a suspect was identified and taken into custody.

The message below was sent home to families:

“Good morning families this is Mr. Carroll and I wanted to make you aware of a situation that occurred today. This morning a student alerted staff about a gun hidden in bushes near the practice football field. Our campus security associates located the weapon and immediately turned it in to police. A suspect has been identified and is currently in custody. I want you to know that we take these incidents seriously. I appreciate the student sharing the information. Keeping our kids safe takes everyone, families, students and staff. Thank you for your help and please call me if you have any questions.”
