‘He was a fireball': 12-year-old dies days after shooting outside NC apartment

DURHAM, N.C. — A 12-year-old boy has died days after he was shot inside his North Carolina apartment, according to our news partner WTVD.

Tyvien McLean died Monday after several days on life support. His aunt Danielle McLean said he was in sixth grade.

“He was a fireball, full of energy, loved to joke,” Danielle McLean said.

Durham Police Chief CJ Davis said the shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. on July 14 on E. Weaver Street when two groups of people started shooting at each other.

A bullet went through the second-story window of the apartment where Tyvien McLean lived and hit him.

Davis could not say whether the shooting was gang-related, but she did say the details of what happened match typical characteristics of gang violence.

Tyvien McLean was one of three children shot in Durham over the span of a few hours on July 14.

In a separate shooting on Benjamine Street, eight people were shot including a 4-year-old and an 8-year-old.
