High-angle rescue performed after hiker falls at Hanging Rock

STOKES COUNTY, N.C. — Crews preformed a “high-angle rescue” Sunday after a hiker fell at North Carolina’s Hanging Rock State Park.

WNCT reported the man lost his balance and fell up to 40 feet near the lower cascades. He then slid another 70 feet.

The Fire and Rescue Association Technical Response team along with the City of King Fire Department were called to the park to help with the rescue, according to a Stokes County Fire and Rescue Association Facebook post.

According to WNCT, when rescuers got there they were told to help set up a safety line for the low angle situation. Team members helped with splinting and packaging the patient as well as setting up rigging for the safety line.

The hiker was taken to the hospital in serious condition but is expected to recover, WNCT reported.

The North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation says that Hanging Rock State Park has “20 miles of hiking trails that climb onto spectacular views.” The Lower Cascades Trail is listed among its “moderate” trails.
