CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A restaurant within this historic building in downtown Matthews is now dishing up small plates, craft cocktails and boutique wines.
The Portrait Gallery — named for a former tenant — mimics an art-gallery vibe while delivering a casual environment to enjoy time with friends and family, says Alistair Williams, general manager.

It is open for dinner service at 118 E. Charles St.
That building dates to the 1890s and has served a number of purposes over the years, from fish store to barber shop.
The restaurant dials in on its most recent use with an art theme.

Expect a European vibe, where the atmosphere is both elegant as well as casual and relaxing.
“We want it to be accessible,” Wiliams says. “But the ‘wow’ factor is something we really want to capitalize on.”
Over $500,000 has been invested into that venture.
