ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — A fire in Alexander County that destroyed a home in Stony Point on Sunday is being investigated by Fire officials to determine whether the fire was caused by a lightning strike.
The family of the home was not there when the fire started. The mother and her three boys went out Sunday morning and didn’t find out until they got a phone call from a neighbor.
“It is very unbelievable,” mother Stephanie Norton said, “We’re trying to wrap our head around it. I do want to thank everyone in the community for reaching out and offering assistance and help. It’s very much appreciated at this time.”
Three fire departments, including Stony Point, fought that fire, with firefighters arriving at the scene two minutes after getting the call.
The fire marshal tells Channel 9’s Dave Faherty that neighbors reported a severe thunderstorm, including significant lightning strikes at the time when the fire started.
The fire marshal says they are checking with the National Weather Service about the lightning strikes nearby.
