LANCASTER, S.C. — The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office, are investigating the discovery of human skeletal remains off South Potter Road.

Deputies were called to a tract of privately own land near Bear Creek Park around 1 p.m. Saturday. Deputies say the remains were discovered in a field and appeared to have been there for a long time.

A bag containing personal effects was also discovered nearby. Investigators collected the personal effects, which provided leads concerning the person’s identity.

The remains will be examined to determine the person’s identity and the cause and manner of death.

No evidence of foul play has been discovered at this time, deputies said.

“We know very little at this early stage in the investigation, but we hope the examination of the remains and the personal items found nearby will lead us to the identity of this person very soon,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “We encourage anyone who might have any information that could help us answer these questions to call us.”
