Iconic Penguin sign in Plaza Midwood to come down after nearly 70 years

CHARLOTTE — The iconic Penguin Drive-In sign is coming down.

FS Food Group will retire the sign at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 3. It’s been at Thomas and Commonwealth avenues since 1954.

The sign will be donated to the Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association.

“We’re trying to respect the heritage,” says Frank Scibelli, founder of FS Food.
